When God lived in Ife
[

The new exhibition opening at Palazzo Strozzi takes up the African theme again, (the Africans in Africa show has put off closing until March 29th) but this time seen from an ethnic point of view. The When God lived in Ife show hosts 50 masterpieces from the National Museum of Nigeria, that testify to the ancient Nok culture (where the first terracotta sculptures were found in the 1940’s), refined decorations from the court of Igbo-Ukwu, classical art styles from Ife, the holy capital city of the Yoruba nation, and the splendour of the court of Benin, powerful city-state in Africa.
It was only possible to carry out this exhibition thanks to the earlier show organised in 1963 by Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti, to whose memory this edition is dedicated. It includes 50 original photos taken during the earlier show by Herbert List, one of the 20th century’s greatest photographers.
Showing at Palazzo Strozzi in Piazza Strozzi in Florence from March 4th to July 3rd. Entrance: _ 8,00/6,50. Opening hours: 10am - 8pm.
